| There are an increasing number of outpatient and same-day surgeries. In order to identify medical problems prior to a scheduled event and to institute risk-reducing strategies, a medical preoperative consultation is often valuable. Preoperative consultations are beneficial to evaluate and adjust treatment of underlying medical conditions, which could put the patient in jeopardy during the surgical procedure. In addition, risk stratification enables the physician and surgeon to identify patients with a high operative risk so that measures may be taken to try and reduce that risk. We are striving to fulfill a need within the medical community and have opened a Preoperative Center.
Our highly trained team of Internal Medicine Doctors and Critical Care Specialists offer preoperative medical consultations. We will provide you with a medical evaluation of the surgical risk and initiate measures to reduce that risk. When requested, we will be happy to follow your patient and manage their medical issues during their hospitalization. In addition to a complete examination, we will also perform pulmonary function testing, EKG, and lab work as indicated. Your office will be notified within 24 hours whether the patient is a satisfactory medical risk for the surgery planned or if additional testing and/or interventions are required. The transcribed reports, test results, preoperative orders, and post-operative recommendations will be forwarded promptly to your office and to the hospital where the surgery is scheduled.
Our physicians seeing your preoperative patients are hospital-based physicians who have dedicated Pre-op Clinic hours.In order to allow enough time for the appropriate preoperative evaluation and testing, we request that you refer your patients to us a minimum of 1 week prior to their scheduled surgery. Scheduling your elective surgeries with us as soon as possible will allow us ample time to evaluate your patients for medical clearance and get this valuable information back to your office. Our staff will work with you to try and accommodate patients who have emergent situations that fall outside of our regular Pre-op clinic schedule.
