There are numerous web sites catering to physicians. The following are just a sample of some that we use.
http://www.merckmedicus.com/ This is a very comprehensive site that includes news and alerts, journal scan, DXplain, ThereDoc, MDConsult, Harrison’s online, Merck Manual, Cecil Textbook of Medicine, dozens of free CME courses, Best Practice by Praxis.MD, drug reference, lecture slides and Dorland’s Dictionary. Also included is Patient handouts on hundreds of topics and drugs and technology assessments of software and hardware products.
http://www.webmd.com/ has numerous features including Scientific American Medicine and Surgery online. Patient handouts, CPT code average charges, CME and access to online medical records are also available.
http://www.mdconsult.com/ is available by subscription or can be accessed free through MerckMedicus.com or through GDAHIN locally. This is an outstanding resource with 39 textbooks online, full-text journals, practice guidelines and drug information. Patient handouts and CME is also available.
http://www.pubmed.gov/ is the quickest and easiest way to search the medical literature listed in Index Medicus. Only the reference and often abstracts are available but you can request the full document for a fee. MDConsult may have the full-text journal available. Or, if you subscribe to a journal it’s full text it is often available free online (JAMA, CHEST, CCM, NEJM are ones that I access).
http://www.emedicine.com/ is another free site that brings you updates in your specialty and has medical reference articles online. You can download the free book - eMedicine: Disaster and Trauma - onto your PDA from this site also. Also, you can automatically receive all new article abstracts from any journal by email each week!
